Information selection with search engines. Perception and selection of search results
Abstract #
Search engines have become a central tool for online information retrieval. This book explores which criteria are important for selecting search results when searching for information using search engines.
To do so, it systematizes the search process and identifies relevant factors influencing selection decisions, bringing them together in a model that describes the impact of various factors on each step of the search process. Three preliminary studies and one main study—each using an experimental design and automated tracking of search behavior—are conducted to empirically test selected model steps.
The results show that ranking acts as a dominant influencing factor. However, there are also distinct influences from source characteristics and individual attributions (e.g., perceived credibility of search results) on the search process.
